AI Accelerating Digital Transformation with Mixed Methods Research

Dr. Faith Anne McCreary, Senior Principal Engineer, Retired Intel, and Stephanie Battista Hubbard, Product Experience Director at Humanity Innovation Labs, presented at the Lumivero Virtual Conference in Denver on September 26th at 9:30 AM MST for a session on AI Accelerating Digital Transformation with Mixed Methods Research. “The event saw an incredible turnout with 6,190 registrations and 2,794 attendees. Both speakers and attendees shared overwhelmingly positive feedback about the sessions.” ~ Lumivero Conference Host

This session delved into the complex challenges of integrating AI and IoT with legacy systems and creating entirely new technological solutions. Successfully navigating these complexities requires more than just technological expertise—it demands a holistic, socio-technical approach that considers the entire ecosystem of technology, people, and interactions.

We explored how to frame digital transformation with a 360-degree view, focusing on key actors (people, organizations, systems) and their purposes. By recognizing the connections and context surrounding technology, we adopt an inquiry-driven process that emphasizes longitudinal and mobile research. This research approach helps frame the environment for future products or services while considering multiple timeframes (immediate, 1-2 years, and 3-5 years out), ensuring solutions remain resilient in the face of changing conditions and technologies.

Engaging diverse participants through collaborative, participatory activities helps make technology accessible, encourages imaginative thinking, and bridges the gap between new innovations and familiar user experiences.

A critical tool in this process is NVivo software, which we use for advanced data analysis. NVivo’s meta-coding structure organizes diverse themes and data layers, synthesizing them into actionable insights. This comprehensive approach uncovers patterns and relationships that inform the creation of North Stars—guiding principles that steer innovation and product development.

By combining AI, IoT, and mixed-methods research, we’re able to address current technological challenges while fostering adaptable, future-proof solutions that drive digital transformation and mitigate risks.
